Titolo: Low dimensional electron gases in solid state devices: spin properties of the 2D electron gas in real devices.

Abstract: It is nowadays possible to fabricate solid-state devices in which electrons are confined at the nanoscale in suitable geometries and move almost freely, suffering very little scattering. Some of these devices are believed to provide a close realization of the so-called two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) model and are being intensely studied in connection with the apparent metal-insulator transition in two dimensions. I shall review the available experimental evidence on the low-temperature spin susceptibility of such systems and demonstrate, with the help of accurate QMC predictions, that the 2DEG appears to indeed provide a good model when details such as thickness, sources of scattering, and valley degeneracy are duly kept into account.
